How do I choose the right vegega raised garden beds?

First, assess your garden’s upgrade goals and measure the dimensions of your available space. It’s also important to map out exactly where each bed will go.
Our recommendations:
Against a wall: We suggest a 2ft width for easy reaching.
Open areas (accessible from both sides): You can go wider—the most popular choice is 4ft width.
Corners: To maximize corner space or define a specific area, our L-shaped or U-shaped beds are perfect.
Unique layouts: If you want a standout look, explore Vegega’s wide variety of special shapes.
Pro Tip: Decide if you need trellises or covers before you buy. It’s much easier to install them during assembly; adding them after the bed is filled with soil may require digging out dirt to reach the bolt holes.

How should I plan my garden bed layout?

When designing your layout, there are 3 key factors to consider:
Pathway Clearance: Ensure you leave enough room to move and work.
A minimum of 2 ft between beds is recommended for walking and planting.
If you require access for wheelchairs or wheelbarrows, we suggest a width of at least 3 ft.
For those who need to mow between beds, measure your lawn mower’s deck and add an extra 10 inches of clearance to avoid any bumps.
Sun Exposure:
Most vegetables and flowers thrive in full sun. Position your beds in an area that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
Water Accessibility: Convenience is key! Make sure your beds are located near a water source to make irrigation easy and efficient throughout the season.
Place tall beds to the North. To avoid shading your smaller plants, keep taller raised garden beds and trellis at the northern end of your layout.

Which height is right for me?

Choosing the perfect height depends on your soil quality, physical comfort, and local climate. Here is a quick guide to help you decide:
Poor or Compacted Soil:
If your ground is hard, rocky, or clay-heavy, we recommend the 17" or 32" height. These provide enough depth for roots to thrive without struggling against the native ground.
If your garden already has great soil, the 11" height is a fantastic, budget-friendly option to define your space and beautify your garden.
Gardening Experience & Comfort:
The "Back-Saver" (32"): Ideal for those who prefer no-bend gardening. While it requires a larger initial investment in soil, it offers an unmatched ergonomic experience.
The "Sweet Spot" (17"): Our most popular choice. It offers the best balance of price, aesthetics, ease of planting, and a manageable amount of soil filling.
Climate & Drainage
The 11" and 17" beds are superior at retaining moisture because they stay in closer contact with the earth’s natural water table.
The 32" height offers exceptional drainage, preventing waterlogging in areas with heavy rainfall.
Taller beds warm up faster in the spring, allowing you to start your planting season earlier than in-ground gardens.

Is assembly difficult? What should I keep in mind?

Don’t worry! Assembling a Vegega metal garden bed is a breeze. All you need is a manual screwdriver, though an electric screwdriver will make the job even faster. Everything you need is included right in the box!
Unbox & Peel: Take out all the panels. Crucial step: Remember to peel off the protective film!
Assemble: Align the panels according to your chosen shape and secure them with the provided bolts. Our detailed instruction manual will guide you every step of the way.
Bracing Rods: Ensure the bracing rods are installed exactly in the positions shown in the manual for maximum stability.
Finishing Touch: Attach the rubber edging to the top rim, and you’re all set!
Why it’s easier with Vegega: Our beds are engineered to be incredibly sturdy with fewer bolt holes to manage. Plus, we only apply the protective film to one side, significantly cutting down your prep time. The entire process is so efficient that one person can easily finish it in just 30–40 minutes.

How much soil do I need, and how can I save money?

You can find the exact volume of each garden bed under the Configurations section on our product pages.
Keep in mind that you only need to fill the bed to 80%–90% of its total capacity.
Pro Tip: You don’t need to buy premium potting mix for the entire bed! Save money by using the Hugelkultur method:
The Base (Bottom 50%): Fill the bottom half with organic debris like logs, sticks, and dry leaves. Over time, these materials will decompose into rich, nutrient-dense soil.
The Top: Top off the remaining space with high-quality garden soil or compost.
Additionally, you can turn your kitchen scraps, fallen leaves, and grass clippings into a continuous supply of nutrient-rich compost. Because our raised beds minimize soil erosion and nutrient runoff, you’ll save both time and money in the long run.

Quick Tips for Vegega Raised Beds

Can a raised garden bed be placed on the concrete ground?

Yes, you can start a raised garden bed almost anywhere, whether it's on concrete or in a corner of your garden. Just make sure it's located in a spot that receives plenty of sunlight. Additionally, you can enhance drainage by placing the outer packing carton at the bottom of the raised garden bed.

Can we place rocks at the bottom of the garden bed to increase drainage space?

Yes, you can do this, especially in 32-inch tall garden beds or in areas of the yard with poor drainage. Placing crushed rock or pea gravel at the bottom of a raised bed can effectively improve drainage and air circulation. Since soil tends to settle and become compacted over time, having rock at the bottom of the bed provides space for excess water to drain away from plant roots.

How much soil should I prepare for the metal garden beds?

Landscape fabric is not a necessity. For 11, 17, and 32-inch beds, do not have these worries due to the varying height structures. But if you want to keep your place clear or control weeds, that is an option.

Does my garden need a "Bottom Barrier"?

Whether you need a barrier depends on your local environment.
If gophers, moles, or voles are an issue in your area, we strongly recommend laying down stainless steel gopher wire at the bottom before filling your bed with soil.
If you don't have a pest problem, a simple layer of cardboard will do the trick. It effectively suppresses weeds during the initial growing phase and will naturally decompose over time, allowing beneficial earthworms to move in.

Vegega Metal Raised Garden Bed Deep-Dive

What does "6-in-1" or "9-in-1" modular design mean?

For example, '6-in-1' means there are six possible configurations for metal garden beds. You can assemble six different shapes using the included corner and side panels. With these panels, you can unleash your creativity to build raised beds of various sizes and shapes.

What are VEGEGA beds made out of and how long will they last?

VEGEGA is one of the few manufacturers that construct metal raised garden beds from Zn-Al-Mg steel (Zinc-Aluminum-Magnesium). Metal garden beds made from this material can last up to 20 years.

Is it safe to grow food in VEGEGA Raised Beds?

Decomposing galvanized steel garden beds with a Zn-Al-Mg Steel alloy coating requires a very high level of acidity. The neutral soil in which the crops are grown will not have any effect on the coating. Neither the metal nor the coating itself will leach any harmful substances into the soil.

Do VEGEGA raised garden beds have a bottom?

No, the beds don't have bottoms. This design allows excess water to drain, preventing root rot, and also permits worms to access the bed. By using bottomless beds, you enable plant roots to reach the nutrients below the ground.

Will the bed become overheated in a hot environment?

Surprisingly, no! Metal has high thermal conductivity but low thermal mass. This means while the rim might feel warm to the touch, the soil inside stays cooler than it would in plastic or wooden containers. This is thanks to the excellent reflectivity of the galvanized steel, which prevents most of the heat from entering the soil. As a result, the soil inside the bed can rapidly absorb and dissipate heat from the stainless steel edges. Our elevated garden beds excel at maintaining a consistent and cool soil temperature. To demonstrate that our metal garden beds won't harm plant roots in hot summer conditions, we invited internet celebrities and customers to conduct a test and create a video. You can watch the test video by clicking here, and read the accompanying article.

Can the metal raised garden bed resist the cold if we live in an extremely cold area?

The metal garden bed doesn't require any extra maintenance in the winter and can withstand temperatures as low as -76°F.

What is the thickness of the metal beds?

VEGEGA uses extra strength 0.6mm thick Zn-Al-Mg coated sheets. This heavy-duty material is robust enough to support soil for decades and has a lifespan of 4-7 times longer than wooden or plastic beds.

Will the metal garden bed rust if the paint is scratched during use?

While the paint surface helps prevent rust, the primary rust prevention layer is the Zn-Al-Mg plating layer beneath the paint. Even if the paint gets scratched, it maintains high rust resistance.

Will the metal raised garden beds move or float away?

No, our metal raised garden beds won't float away. The weight of the soil and plants holds the bed firmly in place. Even on slightly sloped surfaces, the raised beds remain stable on various grounds such as grass, cement, or wooden decks.

Shipping & Return

What if the metal sheet's edges are extruded and distorted during transport?

Since metal raised garden beds are relatively heavy, some damage may be caused during transportation. For example, impacts may lead to bending in the corners. Although we take great care to package our garden beds before shipping, occasional damage may still occur. If you open the shipping box and find that the garden bed is damaged or crushed, please retain the shipping box, take photographs of the damaged areas, and send them to our customer service email at support@vegega.com. Upon receiving your email, we will assist you in dealing with the issues. If the damage is serious, we will provide a free return or exchange service.

What if I want to return or exchange a product for personal reasons?

If the return is not due to product issues, such as damage, incorrect items, or missing accessories, but rather for personal reasons, we will accept returns as long as the buyer keeps the original packaging undamaged and it does not affect the resale of the product. To initiate a return, please contact our customer service at support@vegega.com for return instructions. We will provide you with a return address.
